Cauda Equina Syndrome

What is Cauda Equina Syndrome – Anil Kesani MD

Dr. Anil Kesani explains that Cauda Equina Syndrome is a medical emergency.  He explains that cauda equina syndrome is caused when the spinal nerve roots within the lumbar spine become severely compressed or pinched resulting in the disruption of the electrical signals from being transmitted from a persons brain to their legs.  If left untreated it can result in leg paralysis and even permanent bowel and bladder incontinence.

Board-certified orthopedic surgeon Dr. Anil Kumar Kesani practices orthopedic spine surgery at SpineMD in North Richland Hills, Texas and serves patients in the Dallas Fort Worth area.  Anil Kesani, MD, is experienced in treating a variety of neck problems, back problems and spine problems by using a combination of nonsurgical as well as surgical treatment options.  Dr. Kesani reserves spine surgery for patients who do not respond to nonsurgical treatment or rarely as a first line treatment in patients with extreme conditions that either require emergency treatment such as spinal cord compression and cauda equina syndrome (CES).

Most people experience lower back pain at some point in their lives, but are typically capable of avoiding surgery. However, some lower back problems, particularly when they are extreme, maybe a sign of cauda equina syndrome, a rare and serious condition that often requires surgical treatment. This condition typically occurs in patients who experience massive disc herniations that severely pinch or compress all the nerve roots in the lumbar spine or cauda equina.  Occasionally it  may occur in adults who have experienced spine injuries with severe fractures, tumors or other spinal lesions that lead to severe pinching or compression of all the lumbar spinal nerves.

Though the condition is more common in adults, it has been seen in children.  If you believe you or a loved one may be suffering from cauda equina symdome with symptoms such as severe back and leg pain, leg weakness, bowel and or bladder incontinence or even urinary retention, please seek urgent evaluation by a spine surgeon or call Dr. Kesani’s office at SpineMD on (817) 893 6001.

Disc Herniation

What is a Disc Herniation? – Anil Kesani MD

Dr. Anil Kesani explains that disc herniation describes a condition where the central part of the spinal disc or intervertebral disc leaks out past the outer ring and subsequently can cause pain by pinching or compressing adjacent nerve roots.  Dr. Anil Kumar Kesani is an orthopedic surgeon specializing in spine surgery practicing in North Richland Hills, Texas. Specializing in the minimally invasive treatment of spinal problems, Dr. Anil Kesani, MD, at SpineMD is well versed in all the potential treatment options for a herniated disc.

How Does Disc Herniation Happen?

Disc herniation is a fairly common condition and affects the flat pads or discs made of soft tissue between the vertebrae. The discs are comprised of a soft center referred to as the nucleus pulposus, and a tough outer layer called the annulus fibrosus. When enough pressure squeezes the disc, part of the soft center is forced through the annulus much like the jelly in a jelly donut.

Herniated discs can happen at any point along the spine, but they’re most common in the lumbar spine followed by the cervical spine. A herniated disc is almost always painful and can often be traced back to age related degeneration, excessive body weight, or strains resulting from violent motion. The recommended treatment varies depending on the nature and severity of the herniation. It can range from physical therapy, anti-inflammatory medications, epidural injections to spinal surgery in extreme cases.
